The founder, Matthew E. Luallen, used the same approach used for years to define a password using security by obscurity. Essentially, system administrators would utilize a simple technique of using dictionary words and then modify letter e's to 3's, hence the name of Sph3r3 (Sphere).

Sph3r3, LLC. was founded in February of 2003 (as a second generation company of InternetworkingConsultant.com, LLC; founded in January of 2000) to provide information systems architecture, security, network design consultation, system integration and educational services to both commercial and government institutions.
